I’ve always been concerned about the treatment of farm animals in the meat industry. I recently saw a video on the treatment of pregnant pigs, kept in stalls that didn’t even allow them to turn their heads. It broke my heart. I went about a week without eating pork. I figured pork was meat I ate the least, and I could start off with giving up pork and eventually move on to other meats. Then I started to think about it. My action of not eating meat is not changing anything. All of these vegetarians and vegans don’t eat meat, but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s still being produced in huge quantities. I wished there was a way to change the system. There should be more control in the meat industry, more rules on humane treatment and living situations for these animals. And why not? Why are the humane requirements for farm animals any different than what we would expect for our own pets? I really would like to do something about this. But I’m only one person, and in a small town in Texas it’s difficult, if not impossible, to get anyone to care about anything. I guess I can start by trying to find Certified Humane meats in my area and eating only that. Maybe I can get some people together and try to convince grocery stores and restaurants in my area to carry and use Certified meats, poultry, dairy, etc. It’s a start. I’d really like to invision a time when all farm animals will have a true “free range” to roam about. I would like to have the comfort of knowing that those animals were truly happy and not born into a life of torture, stress, and illness. I don’t understand why we wouldn’t all want that for them, for us.
